LEGO Harry Potter has a structure most themes lack: many of its play sets are designed to connect into one large Hogwarts castle, which turns buying into a project with an order and a deadline. Sets retire on their own schedule, so the section you skipped this year may be the one that is hard to find next year. This guide covers what the range contains, what our price data says about it, and how to plan the purchases.
What the range contains
Connectable Hogwarts sets are the core: towers, halls and classrooms that join together. They are aimed at children from around eight but are bought heavily by adults completing the castle.
Standalone play sets cover Diagon Alley, the Burrow, Quidditch and scenes from individual films, with the theme's large cast of minifigures.
Collectors' Editions and display sets are the adult end: the Hogwarts Castle (71043) at 6,020 pieces remains the definitive display set, and the Collectors' Edition line has added Gringotts Wizarding Bank (76417) and The Ministry of Magic (76476). At the smaller end, the Mini Hogwarts Castle (40975) and the Book Nook: Dumbledore's Office (76478) give the display format at a lower price.
What the price data says
- The 40 Harry Potter sets in our Danish history were below RRP on 81 % of days, with a median deepest discount of 40 %: slightly less than City or Star Wars, considerably more than Icons.
- Price per piece is 0.92 kr at RRP and 0.64 kr at the cheapest live price, a median discount of 33 %. The licence premium is visible but smaller than Marvel's.
- The large Collectors' Editions and the castle are discounted less often and less deeply than the play sets, in line with other adult flagships.
Which sets to prioritise
- Oldest first. If you are building the connectable castle, buy the sections that have been on the market longest; they retire first. The release year is on every set page.
- Minifigures decide the aftermarket. Sets with characters that appear nowhere else hold their value after retirement; generic scenes do not. If a set contains a figure you want, do not assume you can get it later.
- The play sets can wait for a discount; they arrive within months and deepen towards the end of a set's life. The Collectors' Editions may never see a deep one, so a 20-25 % cut is a good moment.
- Compare across retailers. Harry Potter is stocked by almost every toy retailer, and the spread between shops on a mid-priced set is often larger than the discount at any one of them.
