LEGO Ideas is the theme where fans pitch the product. Anyone can submit a model to the LEGO Ideas platform, and projects that gather 10,000 supporters go through an official review in which LEGO decides whether to produce them. The chosen designs are then reworked by LEGO's own designers, so the finished sets combine a fan's original concept with in-house refinement. The result is an eclectic, mostly adult-oriented range: pop culture tributes, detailed vehicles, working mechanisms and buildings with plenty of interior detail.
Brickheist tracks around thirty Ideas sets, and the large ones are genuinely large. Downton Abbey (21373) is the biggest in our catalogue, followed by the River Steamboat (21356) and Home Alone (21330), each several thousand pieces. Newer releases include Wallace & Gromit (21371) and The X-Files (21369). Because every set starts as an independent fan project, the theme has no fixed format; one release may be a display diorama, the next a mechanical model or a building packed with minifigures.
Ideas sets sit at the upper end of LEGO pricing and are discounted less aggressively than mass-market themes. Around three quarters of the sets we track are on offer somewhere, but the average saving is noticeably smaller than in themes like Speed Champions or Botanicals. Historically, many Ideas sets have had relatively short shelf lives, and popular licensed builds have often risen in value on the secondary market once retired, though that is never guaranteed.
If an Ideas set appeals to you, do not wait too long. Watch for the moderate discounts that appear after launch, when regular toy retailers start stocking a set, and compare prices across shops before committing. Large sets with many minifigures or unique printed parts tend to hold interest best after retirement, whereas smaller display pieces are more likely to be found cheaply later.
