The LEGO Pokémon theme is new, and every set we track comes from its opening year. Rather than starting with small playsets, LEGO launched it mainly as display models for adults and older fans who grew up with the games and cards: large brick-built Pokémon with articulated limbs, and Poké Ball builds with presentation stands.
The flagship is Venusaur, Charizard and Blastoise (72153), by far the largest set in the theme and among the bigger sets LEGO currently sells. Below it come Iconic Trainer Moments Poké Ball (72154) and Pikachu and Poké Ball (72152), with smaller models such as Munchlax (72150) and Rayquaza (72168) offering single characters at a lower entry point.
Despite being new, every Pokémon set we track is already discounted somewhere, averaging around a third off. That is unusual so soon after launch and suggests retailers were well stocked and competing hard. The price range is wide, from mid-priced single figures to a flagship at the very top end of the market. It is too early to say how the sets will behave after retirement, but the Pokémon brand has a large collector base, and the starter trio is the most obvious long-term candidate.
For the flagship, compare every shop carefully, as the absolute saving on a large discount is substantial. Single-character sets are a sensible way to try the theme. Check the finished dimensions of the big models before buying, as they need real shelf space.
