Powered UP is LEGO's current electronics platform: hubs, motors, lights, sensors and power supplies connected with a common plug and controlled over Bluetooth, either with a physical remote or through the Powered Up and Control+ apps. It replaced the older Power Functions system, and it is what you need if you want to motorise a City train, add remote control to a Technic model or build your own motorised contraptions. The parts here are not building sets in the usual sense, which is why the piece counts are in single figures.
The core items are the Train Motor (88011), the Technic Hub (88012) and the newer Rechargeable Battery (88021) and LEGO USB Power Adapter (88019), which address the long-standing complaint about hubs eating AA batteries. Which ones you need depends on the model: trains typically want a hub, a train motor and a remote, while larger Technic builds benefit from the Technic Hub and L or XL motors.
Brickheist sees no discounts on these components right now, and prices are stable across the few shops that stock them. One item in our catalogue is already retired. Electronics rarely gain collector value in the way sets do, but discontinued motors can become awkward to replace.
Check compatibility before buying: Powered UP does not plug into Power Functions without adapters. If you run several trains, the rechargeable battery and USB adapter pay for themselves quickly. Buy motors and hubs when you need them, and compare shipping costs, which can matter more than the sticker price on small items.
