About LEGO Technic

Technic replaces studs and bricks with beams, pins, axles and gears, and the result is a theme about how machines work rather than how they look alone. Builds involve working steering, suspension, gearboxes, pneumatics and, in some sets, motors and app control. The audience ranges from older children to adults who enjoy long, methodical builds, and the finished models are often as interesting to take apart as to put together.

The line today leans heavily on licences. Car manufacturers, motorcycle brands and Formula 1 teams appear throughout the range, from compact pull-back models to large-scale flagships. The biggest sets in our catalogue are the Koenigsegg Sadair's Spear Megacar (42232) at 4,104 pieces, the McLaren P1 (42172) and the Ferrari Daytona SP3 (42143), all part of the series of large-scale supercars with working gearboxes. Recent releases such as the Ducati Desmo450 MX Factory Motorcycle (42238) and the Aston Martin Aramco AMR25 F1 Car (42240) show the licensed direction continuing, while construction machines and off-road vehicles remain the functional backbone.

Discounts on Technic are common and generous. Almost every set Brickheist tracks is available below recommended retail, with typical reductions of around a third. Large supercars are often discounted surprisingly quickly after launch, as retailers compete on the halo products. After retirement, the flagship cars and the more ambitious construction models tend to hold their value best, while small licensed cars rarely attract collector interest.

If you are after function per unit of money, construction and off-road sets usually offer more mechanisms than the licensed cars, where part of the cost goes to the brand. For supercars, patience pays; they rarely stay at full price for long. Check whether a set relies on a separately sold motor or hub, and keep in mind that large Technic sets contain many small pins, which inflates the piece count relative to the physical size of the model.
